A2 Graphic Design: Creative Advertising Campaign

For Unit 3 in the second year of college, our task was to create a campaign for a organisation or product of our choice. I chose to create a campaign about deforestation for Greenpeace. Research was carried out in great detail, in order to find the problems causing this world wide issue, and which animals are affected the most. The pieces I have produced for this campaign take different approaches to advertising, with the use of different medias.

This is some of the research I have carried out,  enabling me to create strong ideas, that are in direct relation to the issue at hand, and allowing me to focus on certain elements that need to be changed.

Booklet Posters

The following three images are from a Greenpeace concertina booklet to highlight the consequences of deforestation. The tree image will be cut away from the background, this will add interest and create a more engaging booklet design.

For the "Slash and Burn" page, I created interesting typefaces with features that represented the word, by adding slashes and flames. The graphic highlights the the transition from forest to cityscape through the "Slash and Burn" culture.

To highlight the issue of Logging, I implemented the logging truck I produced for the Infographic and added tree stumps. I also played with the text in order to represent meaning and turn it into an identity.

Together the images come together as one, with the use of the rays in the background to form a link between each page.

The fight against deforestation, and how you can help

This is an Infographic piece that I created for the creative advertising project, looking at Greenpeace. I focused on two of the most endangered species in the world, the Giant Panda, and the Javan Rhino in order to create a faster reaction from supporters. The piece is based on the artist Amy Young, who has produced incredible infographics which therefore influenced me to create this particular piece.

I decided to implement the causes of deforestation, and focused on "Logging" and "Slash and Burn" for causes. A diagram of China and the habitat of the Giant Panda, is a shocking representation of the land taken away from the rare species. I chose facts that are just as unbelievable for people to want to make a change.

I created every part of the piece using Adobe Illustrator. This is an example of the steps taken to build the Logging truck that has been implemented into the piece.

Rainforests could vanish in 100 years at the current rate of deforestation

I created a flat Illustration that consists of multiple shapes and gradients in order to create a piece that connotes the effect of deforestation, and how it will affect the world as a whole over 100 years. Slowly dying trees and light to dark gradients create the effect of gradual decay across the world, and the use of the timeline gives context, enabling the piece to represent the quote "Rainforests could vanish in 100 years at the current rate of deforestation".

Collagraph

I took part in an artist workshop and produce some Collagraph prints. These were based on my Greenpeace project. I used a variety of materials including cardboard and string to add depth and texture. The final print was successful, however a letter E was damaged during the creation of the collagraph resulting in a mis-spelling.

It's time to act

I have looked at typography and screenprinting, which had led me to create this design based on the work of James Joyce. I am currently in the process of getting the design transferred onto a screen in order to create a screen print. I have incorporated a world peace symbol in order to represent Greenpeace, and their mission. I wanted this to be subtle, and merge with the design, which I believe has worked well.

AS Graphic Design

In AS Graphic design, I created pieces for two projects. The first being a quote of your choice. And the second being the four elements, air, earth, water and fire. Throughout these projects, I developed new skills in Adobe Photoshop, gradually improving throughout the year in different skills and techniques. I incorporated line drawings to ideas as well as digital based media.

Sometimes when you fall down, you can't get back up.

For Unit 1 at AS Level I chose the quote "Sometimes when you fall down, you can't get back up" and delivered visual representations. This is a literal representation of the quote shown in the form of a man falling off a building into the middle of the street in the style of Dan Mumford. I firstly experimented with perspective drawing before designing the final illustration, to create the effect of the man falling.

Elemental Tree

In order to produce this piece for Unit 2 of AS Graphic Design, I firstly made a hand drawn of the tree and implemented that into Photoshop to use as a template to the design. I made a mistake with the moon on the right hand side, therefore this was later changed on Photoshop.

I created the lava texture in Photoshop with the use of rendered clouds, which represents fire. The earth element comes from the tree, and the water from the tidal wave. I used textured brushes to create the leaf effect on the foliage of the tree. If I was to produce this piece again, I would create it in Adobe Illustrator to create a professional finish, and add blowing leaves to create an aspect of wind in the piece, as the foliage itself does not create this effect as strongly as I would have liked.

The Last Airbender

This is a piece that I created for Unit 2, looking at the four elements (air, water, earth and fire). For this piece I decided to create a poster for the film "The Last Airbender".  In order to create the air/wind element, I used smoke brushes. I hand drew the arrow, and added it to photoshop to produce the glowing effect. I wanted to create an idea of interactivity, therefore added the hashtag.

For my final outcome in Unit 2, I decided to recreate the piece and develop it further. I wanted to implement fire and water as well as air, therefore to stick to the ethos of the film, I added the fire bender, and water bender. I created these by taking primary images of friends, and using them as a template. I also added the towers of a church in the background that was also a primary image.
